Toxins absorbed into the body while battling fire is a significant health concern for firefighters. The Johnston-Grimes Fire Department is raising money to buy three medical-grade saunas to help reduce firefighters' risk of contracting cancer from toxins in the air while working fires. The three saunas are estimated to cost the Fire Department about $15,000, and the goal is to put one in each of the fire stations in Johnston and Grimes.
The Grimes Lions Club recently donated $500 to the Grimes Fire Station to support their efforts.
