Brief History

Lions Club International was formed in 1917 when Melvin Jones, a 38-year-old Chicago business leader challenged members of his local business club to reach beyond business issues and address the betterment of their communities and the world. His colleagues agreed and the “Association of Lions Clubs” was formed. Within three years, Lions became an international organization. Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service club organization. There are 1.35 million members in more than 46,000 clubs worldwide. Our Motto is “We Serve”.

Lions have worked on projects designed to prevent blindness, restore eyesight and improve eye health and eye care for hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Indeed, sight is one of Lions defining causes. Through professional training, healthcare system development and wide spread drug treatment distribution, Lions have gained worldwide recognition for their work to improve sight and prevent blindness.

The Grimes Lions Club was founded in 1947. Our Mission Statement is “To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation. Grimes Lions Club serves in many ways.

We are very active in our community and are constantly looking for ways we can assist in the growth of our town. We support other numerous organizations by providing financial backing and manpower. We are really trying to grow our club membership and currently have a nice diversity of men and women as well as a wide range of ages in our club, which makes for some great conversations at our meetings.
