2012/13 Grimes Lions Club President Steven Reneker (left) presents Grimes Lions Club member Jay Firkins with the Warren Coleman Honorary Award at the Club’s regular meeting on Monday, September 24th.
Most notably, Firkins was granted the award due to his ongoing involvement in the transportation of eye transplant tissue. Over a three year period, through his voluntary transport involvement, he has driven over 3,500 miles. Upon receiving the award Firkins stated “I didn't do it for the award. I've just always believed that the cause was important.”

The eye tissue transport effort is organized by the Iowa Lions Eye Bank; a non-profit service organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of sight through the recovery, processing and distribution of human ocular tissue for transplantation and research, primarily in Iowa, but also throughout the world.

Firkins is the most recent of several Grimes Lions Club members to have received the award, which was named in honor of longtime Executive Secretary Treasurer Warren Coleman, who gave freely his time and dedication to the Iowa Lions Foundation and the programs which it supports. The award is conferred to persons who demonstrate community service and can only be made possible by a contribution of $1,000 to the Iowa Lions Foundation.
